Less than fifty years ago, the only ways to get published were through a variety of major New York publishers, usually requiring representation by an agent, or independently through the so-called "vanity press." Since the early part of this century, the mainstream publishing route has grown ever narrower and less lucrative while independent presses and self-publishers have flourished. For any writer seeking publication, it can be difficult to decide which is the more sensible route.

D. Patrick Miller is a 12-book author, editor, independent publisher, and literary agent in Napa -- in fact, the only agent in wine country. After placing several titles with major New York houses during the 90s, he founded his own self-publishing imprint, Fearless Books, in 1997 and by 2003 was helping other writers publish through Fearless Literary Services. The first book he assisted, THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE UNIVERSE by Gary Renard, sold 15,000 copies in its first year and was later licensed for six figures to Hay House, which went on to make it an international best-seller. He's assisted many other writers with their publishing start, including SF Chronicle columnist Kevin Fisher-Paulson whose three books have all been produced by Fearless, including last year's SECRETS OF THE BLUE BUNGALOW: More True Tales of Family Life in the Outer, Outer, Outer, Outer Excelsior. Branching out as a solo literary agent in 2015, Patrick joined the Linda Chester Literary Agency of Berkeley last year and represents a variety of authors in fiction and nonfiction to mainstream publishers. Meanwhile he continues a busy Assisted Publishing program through Fearless Literary.

Patrick's presentation will help local writers determine the optimal publishing choice for their work in progress and will include a review of "5 Keys to A Successful Manuscript".
